Racing history, Canberra connections and a shared love of the trail
Yeti’s story brings together race bikes, determined riders and a community that keeps coming back for another day on the trails.
For this month’s brand feature, we’re exploring the people and history behind Yeti Cycles, including a racing connection that brings the story right here to Canberra.
A story that began with racing
In 1985, Yeti founder John Parker worked with racers and friends to develop the brand’s first frame. Its name made the intention clear: F.R.O., short for “For Racing Only”.
Built from chromoly steel, that early bike came from a period when mountain biking was still finding its direction. Riders and builders were experimenting with what an off-road bicycle could do, and competition offered a place to put those ideas to the test. Explore Yeti’s early bike history.
That close relationship between riders and bike development continued as the sport evolved. Yeti’s account of the early 1990s describes its racing team as central to research and development, with advances in suspension and materials helping shape new designs. Read about Yeti’s early racing years.
It helps explain the brand’s lasting appeal to riders who enjoy following the sport as much as getting out on their own bikes.
An Australian connection with a Canberra milestone
Australian rider Jared Graves became a major part of Yeti’s story after joining the company in 2005.
His contribution extended well beyond race results. Yeti credits Graves with influencing bikes including the 303 DH, SB66 and SB6, bringing his experience directly into product development. He also helped mentor younger riders, including Richie Rude.
For Canberra riders, there is a particularly memorable local connection: Graves won the four-cross World Championship in Canberra in 2009. Four-cross racing put riders together on a short course where starts, cornering and split-second decisions could decide the result. His victory gave the home crowd an Australian world champion to celebrate.
Yeti’s retrospective on Graves includes mechanic Shaun Hughes recalling that Canberra event as the beginning of their working relationship. It is a reminder that the history of a bike brand is also built through the relationships between riders, mechanics and the people developing their equipment. Read Yeti’s tribute to Jared Graves.
A community that meets on the trails
Alongside its racing history, Yeti has developed a tradition of bringing owners and riders together through its Gatherings.
Yeti describes these events as growing naturally from people meeting to ride and spend time together. That tradition has since taken riders to destinations around the world, with past Gatherings including New Zealand, Nepal and the Dolomites. Discover the Yeti Gatherings.
There is something familiar in that idea for anyone with a regular riding group. The bikes might start the conversation, but the friendships grow through shared climbs, trail discoveries and the stories told afterwards.
You don’t need a race calendar to appreciate that side of mountain biking. Sometimes the ride you remember most is an ordinary weekend with good company.
Bringing that enthusiasm home
For us at Bike Culture, that combination of sporting history and everyday enthusiasm makes Yeti an interesting brand to explore.
Learning about the people behind a bike adds another dimension to it. You can follow the development of the sport, recognise the influence of different riders and understand how a brand’s character has taken shape over time.
Then you can take that inspiration into your own riding, whether you’re learning a section of trail, returning to a favourite loop or planning a weekend with friends.
